San Diego Outrigger

NEW SEASON 2008

Here we go!!! The first official race of the SCORA Outrigger season. Saturday at North Ski beach Mission Bay. This event is an ironman race: testing strength and endurance over a great distance in an outrigger canoe. Novice race is 5miles, open ocean racing is 10 miles. You never know what mother nature will have in store for us. Some days its flat and hot, others its victory at sea. No matter what she serves up, we have been training hard and are looking forward to the challenge.

In addition to our standard race schedule SCORA is honored, as a representative of POCA, to host the 2008 World Sprint Championships in Sacremento on Lake Natoma. That comes up August 2-9.

San Diego Outrigger has been an important part of the California Paddling scene. In the club's fifteen year history, we've seen our share of victories. Our team consists of men and women who are passionate about this great sport. Our skill levels cover all ranges from Olympic class athletes to the recreational paddler.

Most importantly we like to have fun. Nothing is better than a fourteen to twenty mile race in the warm California sun and surf. San Diego Outrigger Canoe Club is always looking for fun, team-oriented people.

Outrigger Canoeing is rapidly becoming the most competitive water sport along the west coast, with nearly 24 clubs in Southern California and 17 in Northern California. With all divisions available for both men and women, Outrigger Canoe racing is one of a few totally co-ed water sports.

Divisions
Each race is usually divided as follows:

  • Novice (men and women): 6 person teams of those who haven't paddled in a SCORA outrigger season before.
  • Open Spec (men and women): 6 person teams of experienced paddlers in a SCORA Spec canoe.
  • Open Bradley (men and women): 6 person teams of experienced paddlers in a Bradley canoe.
  • COED: 6 person teams of paddlers, 3 men and 3 women per canoe.
  • Masters (men and women): 6 person teams of old paddlers.
  • Senior Masters (men and women): 6 person teams of very old paddlers.
