California Scuba Divers Just Need Kelp
Although scuba diving was born in the Mediterranean Sea, the next stop in its evolution was California and the sport quickly took hold. Life in the state of California .revolves around the beach and every day throngs of people will be found sunbathing, surfing, boogie boarding, swimming and scuba diving along the coast and at the offshore islands.
San Diego has one of the largest populations of divers in the state and diving opportunities are many. There is diving from boats and from the shore, in canyons and kelp beds and in the clear waters of the islands. Liveaboard dive boats set out on extended voyages, day boats anchor at the kelp beds and over shipwrecks and hundreds of divers make entries from the many beaches.
One of the most renowned dive sites in San Diego is the La Jolla canyon. Here, the divers will find reefs, caves and kelp beds and it is a favorite for deep and night diving. Just a short boat ride from Mission beach, is wreck alley, a graveyard of well preserved shipwrecks including a Coast Guard cutter, a 110 foot kelp cutter and the wreck ot the 366 foot Canadian destroyer named the Yukon.
