California has long been known for its ambiance of ongoing fun and party atmosphere. The beaches are filled with revelers playing volleyball, bathing beauties sunbathing, children building sand castles, skimboarders riding receding waters and surfers hanging ten on the Pacific curls. Jet skis accelerate to and fro, catamarans race the wind, coastal cruisers travel with full sails and many just soak in the cool brine.

California saw the beginning of recreational scuba diving in America, hosted the first dive shops and diving has become a passion for many and a family activity that permanently bonds the participants. Diving along the California coast and at the offshore islands offers divers a diversity of habitat and a multitude of marine life. Although the water is cold the year around, California has one of the largest populations of divers in the country.

San Diego has an endless variety of dive sites with towering kelp forests, plunging canyons and graveyards of shipwrecks. Charter dive boats set out from San Diego for the Channel Islands and destinations in Mexican waters. Underwater hunters and bluewater spearfishermen harvest sea bass, tuna, lobsters, clams, abalone and scallops from the rich coastal waters for family feasts and clam bakes.

Although scuba diving was born in the Mediterranean Sea, the next stop in its evolution was California and the sport quickly took hold. Life in the state of California .revolves around the beach and every day throngs of people will be found sunbathing, surfing, boogie boarding, swimming and scuba diving along the coast and at the offshore islands.

San Diego has one of the largest populations of divers in the state and diving opportunities are many. There is diving from boats and from the shore, in canyons and kelp beds and in the clear waters of the islands. Liveaboard dive boats set out on extended voyages, day boats anchor at the kelp beds and over shipwrecks and hundreds of divers make entries from the many beaches.

One of the most renowned dive sites in San Diego is the La Jolla canyon. Here, the divers will find reefs, caves and kelp beds and it is a favorite for deep and night diving. Just a short boat ride from Mission beach, is wreck alley, a graveyard of well preserved shipwrecks including a Coast Guard cutter, a 110 foot kelp cutter and the wreck ot the 366 foot Canadian destroyer named the Yukon.

One of the best forms of physical exercise and meditation is kayaking. Kayaking on the California coast is truly an incredible experience for any person. When kayaking in the greater San Diego area, one can see all sorts of fishes and other forms of wildlife.

Kayaking can be a great source of bonding for any family. For the family that wants to take an exciting family vacation, kayaking is the answer. Kayaking involves physical exertion from all people situated within a kayak. Thus, family members often learn how to work together on a kayak.

When choosing the area in California for kayaking, a family should try to stick to rivers designated for beginners. Whitewater rafting is fun, but it can also be dangerous if a family does not take necessary precautions. In addition, a family may want to hire an experienced tour guide for a rafting or kayaking experience. A tour guide will know how to position each member of a family in a kayak, so that no accidents are bound to happen.

Kayaking can also be combined with other adventures, such as whale watching tours. There is nothing more revitalizing than kayaking out into the ocean and seeing gorgeous whales in their natural habitat. Dolphin tours are also common and may be enjoyed by your family.

Ocean sports have long been a unique and fun way to get in touch with nature in a way that very few people get to ever experience. First there was surfing, then body boarding, now there is kite surfing. It’s a new sport that is sweeping the world at an incredible rate. Kiteboarding is a very unique sport that is in its own category. It combines the thrills of surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and windsurfing all in one activity. The kite acts as your propeller as you are pulled along on a board. You are attached by harness, and steer with a metal bar so that you are directed anywhere that your heart desires.

California is a prime location for kiteboarding enthusiasts. Locations such as Pismo Beach, Seal Beach, Mission Bay, and Jalama provide some great opportunities to rip through the waves of the Pacific. Throughout California however, you are sure to be able to find some great places to try your hand at kiteboarding no matter which part of the California coast you are on. Throughout the state, opportunities to take lessons and learn from the professionals are available as well. If adrenaline, danger, and water sound like a great combination, than kiteboarding might just be your calling.
